EASTER RECOMMENDATIONS

This year we are fortunate enough to be invited to two Easter dinners, first on Saturday night we will be having both fresh ham (roast pork) and baked Virginia ham (smoked).  Then on Sunday, we will have our traditional Italian Feast which will feature roast leg of lamb (as well as assorted antipasti, manicotti etc., etc.)     Luckily, we own a wine store so we can match all the various dishes.  Here are some of the wines we are considering...

Many people may prefer a cocktail (Martini, Manhattan, etc.), but we will concentrate on the wines.  Of course our first choice is always Champagne or sparkling wine.  however, depending on exactly what is being served, various white wines will do nicely.  Perhaps a Sauvignon Blanc, Sancerre or Muscadet for shrimp cocktail or a flinty Chablis for some clams or oysters.  Do you like Gewürztraminer with fresh asparagus?  How about Pinot Grigio--it goes with everything!   N.V. Prosecco Riondo (Frizzante) $14.99   $162.00
  N.V. Henri Dubois Brut $19.99   $235.00
  2015 Groth Sauvignon Blanc $22.99   $245.00
  2016 Sancerre (Pastou) $19.99   $215.00
  2015 Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine sur lie (Domaine Verdier) $9.99   $108.00
  2015 Petit Chablis (La Chablisienne) $16.99   $185.00
  2015 Gewürztraminer (Willm) $14.99   $162.00

  2015 Pinot Grigio San Pietro $14.99   $162.00

Pasta/2nd Course      We usually have some kind of fancy macaroni like lasagna or stuffed shells.  This year it's manicotti stuffed with creamy smooth ricotta cheese in a light tomato sauce.  Don't worry, we take a long time to eat so we can fit it all in!  Naturally, a light Italian red, like a sangiovese, chianti or vino nobile.  (They go well with pizza rustica --Easter Pie, too!)   2015 Remole Rosso Toscano (Frescobaldi) $10.99   $119.00
  2012 Posere Elisa Riserva $12.99   $140.00
  2013 Grandpa Cha Cha's Homemade Wine $7.99   $86.30
  2012 Frescobaldi Nipozzano Riserva $21.99   $235.00
2010 Ovaida Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (It's Kosher too!) $16.99   $185.00
2013 Canetto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano $23.99   $259.00

Roast Pork--Baked Ham/Main Course      Some people like fresh ham, others prefer smoked ham--so we have both!  Likewise with the pork, we have both red and white wine drinkers--so we have both--California Pinot Noir or a good red Burgundy; for the whites, chardonnay from California or France.  What about a riesling--after all we are having sauerkraut!  For pink ham, we like pink wine--try a Bonny Doon Rosè.  We are not having turkey this year, but you might choose any of these recommendations.   2015 Angeline  Pinot Noir $15.99   $173.00
  2013 Kenwood Pinot Noir $19.99   $215.00
  2015 Edna Valley Chardonnay $14.99   $162.00
  2014 Cambria "Bench Break" Chardonnay $19.99   $215.00

  2014 Chassagne Montrachet (Pilot) $44.99   $485.00
  2014 Bourgogne Chardonnay (Drouhin) $12.99   $140.00
  2014 Barnard Griffin Riesling $11.99   $129.50
  2015 Rielsing (Willm) $11.99   $129.50
2016 Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigar (Rosè) $15.99   $173.00

Roast Leg of Lamb/Main Course      So many possibilities.  It's a good thing that we have a big family.  Classically, merlot based wines seem to complement the lamb nicely, but so do cabernets, Rhones, and what about some Barolo.  Basically any full bodied red will do.  And did somebody say Shiraz?   2014 Ch. Bellvue Lafont (Listrac Medoc) $17.99   $194.00
  2013 Red Diamond Merlot $10.99   $119.00
  2013 Clos du Bois Merlot $14.99   $162.00
  2014 Gigondas (L'Halliali) $21.99   $235.00
  2011 Barolo "Marcenesco" (Ratti) $54.99   $595.00
2013 Palazzo della Torre Ripasso Allegrini Bertani $19.99   $215.00
  2010 Ch. D'Arcie (St. Emilion Grand Cru) $24.99   $270.00
  2015 Penfold's Rawson's Retreat Cabernet Shiraz $10.99   $119.90

Dessert/Of Course!      You still with us?  Well here we go in all directions because we don't know what everybody is bringing.  For fruits and cheese, some Port perhaps.  Muscat with cookies and cake.  Vin Santo with the biscotti.  How about some brandy with your coffee or (ugh) cigar.   2011 Taylor LBV Port $21.99
  1977 Robertson's Rebello Valente Port $65.00
  N.V. Moscato (Bonvia) $9.99
